I was always shy about photographing people. In spite of this, I have tried to photograph members of the local population if the opportunity presented itself. I have delightful memories of a trip through Mongolia. This trip was actually planned to photograph the local fauna (wild sheep, Ubex, Alatai, Maral and so forth) but this proved to be almost impossible because after years of hunting and poaching, the animals were much too shy to make it possible to get close enough for practical photography. Instead, I concentrated on documenting the lives of the nomads with whom I was able to live in close proximity. That was a truly special experience, enjoying their hospitality in their tents. This often led to amusing complications. Only the oldest enjoy the privilege of sleeping in a bunk bed and I was immediately offered the bunk available. I politely declined and slept on the floor with everyone else (the bunk beds were much too short for Europeans in any case). |
